Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating

You can lower your risk of cancer by enjoying a healthy diet, being physically active every day and maintaining a healthy body weight. Studies show being overweight, physically inactive and not eating well increases your risk of developing cancer.

Healthy eating is a first step in reducing your cancer risk. Poor eating habits increase your risk of cancer at many sites in the body. Poor eating habits can also contribute to weight gain, and being overweight or obese increases your risk of cancer. The good news is that a healthy diet, combined with regular physical activity and a healthy body weight can reduce cancer risk.

While there is no one food that can protect against cancer, there are steps you can take to lower your overall risk. A healthy diet may protect against cancers including cancer of the bowel, liver, oesophagus (food pipe), lung and stomach.

Sophie van der Kley from the Cancer Council will share information & resources to help you make great choices for your health & wellbeing.

A food platter will be provided for your enjoyment.

For this session to take place a minimum of 5 people will be required.

Contact Mel Coombe for all enquiries.

Sun Smart

Sun Smart

Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

The sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the major cause of skin cancer. UV damage also causes sunburn, tanning, premature ageing and eye damage. The good news is you can prevent damage – and skin cancer – by being SunSmart.

Sun protection is recommended whenever UV levels reach 3 or higher. Below 3, sun protection isn't recommended unless you are outdoors for extended periods or near reflective surfaces, like snow.

Sophie van der Kley from Cancer Council will be providing helpful information that will help you make wise choices when spending time outdoors.

For this session to take place a minimum of 5 people is required.

Contact Mel Coombe for all enquiries.

Sleep Hygiene

Caroline Thain is the National Clinical Lead at Headspace. In this session she will be unpacking what it means to have good sleep hygiene.

‘Sleep hygiene’ refers to healthy habits, behaviours and environmental factors that can be adjusted to help you have a good night’s sleep.

Some sleeping problems are often caused by bad sleep habits reinforced over years or even decades.

Improved sleep will not happen as soon as changes are made. But if good sleep habits are maintained, sleep will certainly get better.

If you have tried and failed to improve your sleep, you may like to consider professional help.

In order for this session to take place, there will be a requirement of a minimum of 3 people.

Please contact Mel Coombe for all enquiries.

Mental Health Week

About Mental Health Week

Mental Health Week is part of a national mental health promotion campaign held in October each year, and incorporates World Mental Health Day, held globally on 10 October. The purpose of this awareness week is to engage communities in activities that promote mental health and wellbeing and also increase understanding and reduce stigma about mental illness, and how it impacts on the lives of people in our community.

Mental Health Week in Tasmania this year will be from 8 – 16 October. The theme for Mental Health Week this year is ‘Awareness, Belonging, Connection’:

Awareness is about understanding the things we need to maintain and boost our mental wellbeing, and knowing when we need to reach out for help and where to get it.

Belonging is about looking out for each other, ensuring we feel safe and supported, and understanding that however we feel, we’re not alone, and that there are others going through the same thing.

Connection is about our relationships with our friends, families and those that we care about, as well as the groups, clubs, and networks around us that we rely on to help keep us happy and healthy, wherever we live, work, or play.

World Heart Day

World Heart Day

On World Heart Day 2022, we’re asking the world to:

USE HEART FOR EVERY HEART

World Heart Day is an opportunity for everyone to stop and consider how best to use heart for humanity, for nature, and for you. Beating cardiovascular disease (CVD) is something that matters to every beating heart.

Use Heart means to think differently. To make the right decisions. To act with courage. To help others. To engage with this important cause. The heart is the only organ you can hear and feel. It is the first and last sign of life. It is one of the few things with the potential to unite all of us as people.

For Every Heart involves the use of “FOR” and swings the focus from the actions themselves to the beneficiaries of the actions, allowing for wider application of the campaign while also making it more personal. We want World Heart Day messages to reach as many individuals as possible to help achieve cardiovascular health for every heart.
